Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul after the revolution, was extremely fond of the fine arts. After he became head of the French Republic, he encouraged and commissioned a variety of artists, which helped advance the prevailing Neoclassic style in the early 1800s. Also, throughout Europe and across the Atlantic, realism, landscape painting, and photography emerged as promising forces in the art world.
