Early Renaissance Northern Europe

The art of Northern Europe, including 15th century Flanders, featured innovations in oil painting and religious themes. The religious style in Northern Europe is noticeably toned down in comparison with Vatican art, much less gold, and definitely more emphasis on their patrons. Portraiture became was a hit for artists like van Eyck and Rubens. The appearance of 3 distinct dimensions is also very apparent in Northern European renaissance. This style of art spawned from a very rich Gothic culture pertaining mostly to architecture and sculpting.
